This workshop is inspired by trans-disciplinary performance Extant.
Extant is a multilayered performance that takes audiences into a parallel universe. Littered by cables, cameras and equipment, the stage is transformed into a film studio that exposes the behind the scenes of a film production and becomes a performance on its own. It is a space where the creators challenge the perception of the 2D image of the camera through the precision in choreography, lighting and use of props. The other universe take audiences into a live cinema experience that contrasts the making of and tells a poetic story that examines the phases of life, memories and the inevitable constant of time inherent through a physical representations of the relationship between people and the planet. Using a hands-on approach, the meeting of dance and camera engages the narrative through perspective and perception. Extant is a unique multi-layered performance that demolishes art boundaries and transcends conventional structures.
This workshop is designed to foster a culture of collaboration by creating a meeting point for a wide range of artists such as dancers, actors, photographers, filmmakers, writers, dramaturges, light designers, theatre technicians, digital artists, composers, scenographers, art enthusiasts and more to explore the dynamic intersection of live performance and film production in the digital age. Participants will gain hands-on experience in the foundational principles of creating a live cinema experience, learning how to seamlessly blend the boundaries of stage performance and film production to craft a unique and compelling narrative, all while promoting creativity rather than high-budget approaches.
The workshop will cover essential aspects such as innovative light design, where you will experiment with different techniques to create mood and enhance choreography, as well as the creative use of everyday props and materials to transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary settings and essential how to navigate working cohesively within a ‘crew’ environment. By the end of the workshop, participants will collaborate to co-create a new scene, pushing the boundaries of traditional art forms and transcending conventional structures. This immersive experience will inspire new ways to approach live performance and film, empowering dancers to innovate and expand their artistic practices.
